Crowning Glory: a new trophy for the Lexus Melbourne Cup champion horse

31 October 2024 Written by VRC

The three-handled Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy is instantly recognisable around the world and represents triumph for the winning owners, trainers, and jockeys of the race that stops a nation. Now, the Victoria Racing Club introduces a new tradition that honours the heart and soul of the race – the horse itself. For the first time in Cup history, the equine champion will receive a dedicated trophy: a finely crafted leather headcollar.

VRC Chairman Neil Wilson expressed his enthusiasm for this new tradition, saying, “The VRC is very proud to have introduced this new trophy celebrating the horse. It’s a wonderful initiative to have on Melbourne Cup Day, the opportunity to present and acknowledge the winning horse of the Lexus Melbourne Cup.”

This elegant headcollar, crafted from English leather with polished brass accents, will forever represent the horse’s excellence. On one side, a gold plate reads ‘2024 Lexus Melbourne Cup,’ and the other side will feature an engraving of the horse’s name.

“The headcollar will be worn proudly by that horse, the winning horse of this year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup,” Wilson added, “and it will show the world that they’re a winner of Australia’s greatest race.”

This new tradition elevates the horse to its rightful place at the centre of Lexus Melbourne Cup celebrations, recognising not only its incredible athleticism but also the powerful bond between horse and handlers.

Accompanying this are, as always, the meticulously crafted trophies for the winning connections:

Owner trophy: This stunning 18-carat gold masterpiece, valued at $750,000, is sourced from Queensland. Its 44 pieces are meticulously hand welded in over 250 hours by Pallion under the ABC Bullion brand. Its timber base, turned from Jarrah wood from Western Australia, embodies the race’s national significance.

Trainer and jockey trophies: These 2/3 replicas of the Lexus Melbourne Cup honour the dedication and skill behind every champion.

Groom/strapper trophy: A half size replica of the Lexus Melbourne Cup will be presented to recognise the commitment shown by those who work tirelessly to care for these exceptional horses day in and day out.

Breeder trophy: A half size replica of the Lexus Melbourne Cup, presented to the breeder of the winner of the race.
